Topics
- General Information about Absher Neurology, P.A.
-
- The "About" link (below) links you to information about
Absher
Neurology such as its mission,
personnel, and
philosophy of care. We eventually
plan to include information about our business associates, physician
colleagues, and others.
This
part of the website introduces you to Absher Neurology and our vision for
your health care.
-
- Clinical Services Offered Through Absher Neurology
-
- We explain in our Clinical
Expectations Series the differences between
inpatient and
outpatient services,
and summarize what you can expect in each type of situation. We "walk
you through" a typical hospital stay, and a typical new patient appointment,
so you know in advance what to expect. We describe the neurological
history,
physical, neurologic, and
neurobehavioral examinations, discuss the various "subspecialty" areas
of expertise that we have, and explain how our outpatient services are
structured to offer access to both general and subspecialty neurology
services. We explain the tests and procedures that might be suggested
as part of your evaluation and management, why they are useful, and their
potential risks. This part of the website includes the answers to
most of the common questions you may have concerning your clinical
management by Absher Neurology.
-
- Teaching Activities at Absher Neurology
-
- We want to share our knowledge with medical students,
physicians in training, practicing physicians, and other health care
professionals. Obviously, the public is an important audience, too.
Absher Neurology uses a "moodle" website to provide
neurology educational materials and tests to health care
professionals with access to restricted parts of our website. Although
some portions of the website are restricted to our medical students,
interested health care professionals may be granted access to some of the
teaching resources we have online.

- Research Programs at Absher Neurology
-
- Absher Neurology is involved with clinical research. Dr. Absher is
a co-investigator in the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS), a
study of the role of hormone replacement therapy as a potential treatment to
prevent Alzheimer's disease or other dementia syndromes. Absher
Neurology is not recruiting for this study. Pharmaceutical
(drug) studies have been conducted in several areas, and many more are anticipated.
At this time, Absher Neurology is
recruiting patients for (a) a study of an oral therapy for Multiple
Sclerosis (FTY-2309), (b) for a study of mild Alzheimer's disease, (c) for a
study of young patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and recent stroke or
TIA, and (d) for patients with partial seizures who have not yet gotten them
under control. Dr. Absher continues
to pursue the Thalamic Infarction Cognition Study (TICS). If you have
had a stroke within the thalamus, but no other parts of your brain are
damaged by stroke, you may be eligible for participation in the TICS study.
Dr. Absher continues to recruit patients for the TICS study.
Dr. Absher has a longstanding interest neuroimaging research,
including Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI),
and transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound technology. Much of this
neuroimaging work involves cerebrovascular disorders such as stroke and
chronic hypertension. The August 2007 journal, Archives of Neurology,
contains Dr. Absher's latest functional neuroimaging publication. Please check the
Alliance for Neuro Research, LLC, website for the latest information about clinical research opportunities
at Absher Neurology.

- Medical-legal Consultation Services at Absher Neurology
-
- There are a number of situations in which the advice of a neurologist
might be helpful for a medical-legal issue. For example, a patient may
seek compensation for disability, or seek to establish a "disability rating"
related to a Workmen's Compensation claim. The plaintiff in a civil
lawsuit (i.e., the person who brings a claim against someone else) may want
a neurologist to testify that someone else caused their problems and should
therefore pay damages (e.g., seizures due to head trauma). A defendant
(i.e., the person against whom a legal claim has been filed) may need a
neurologist to provide an expert opinion about a case. Insurance
companies may want a neurologist to assess a proposed diagnostic test or
treatment, to comment about the need for rehabilitation services, or review
company policies regarding specific clinical situations (e.g., practice
guidelines for the treatment of multiple sclerosis).
Absher Neurology participates in all types of
medical-legal consultation services, but there are separate charges for
these services, above and beyond the charges applied for routine neurology
care. This section of our website provides clear instructions for
requesting medical-legal services.
